What is a Student-Led Organization?

Student-Led Organizations (SLOs) are NUGSS recognized student-run clubs at UNBC.

These clubs represent a wide variety of student interests and beliefs, such as: gaming, musical theatre, programs (chemistry and biochemistry, biology, nursing), sports (rugby, squash), outdoor recreation, forestry, wildlife and fisheries, advocacy for various communities such as 2SLGBTQQIA+, persons with Multiple Sclerosis, and the promotion of mental health for the UNBC community. Each SLO hosts various activities through the year, from overnight hikes to game nights and more.

Why join a Student-Led Organization?

Whether they are academically oriented or just for general interests and hobbies, SLOs are a great way to pursue your interests and make new connections. They provide the opportunity to meet people outside of the classroom, to contribute to something bigger and to experience one of the most important extracurricular aspects of university life. Joining an SLO also offers opportunities to gain experience in leadership, finance, fundraising, project management, event planning and execution and public speaking/presentations - all valuable skills to bring forward to future employment in your chosen fields.

New to UNBC and not sure what groups you want to join?  

Every September and January we hold SLO Days, where different SLOs set up tables in the hallways around the Wintergarden or in our NUSC Event Space, with information about their group and a sign-up sheet.  You can sign up for as many clubs as you like and try out different ones to see what you enjoy. Keep an eye on our bulletin boards around the UNBC main campus in Prince George or on our SLO social media channels for more information about our SLOs and SLO Days!

Why start your own Student-Led Organization?

If you do not see an existing SLO which meets your interests, consider starting your own! The undergraduate student population at UNBC has diverse interests and backgrounds and NUGSS always welcomes new SLO applications. Starting your own SLO is a great way to promote your interests on campus, engage with other students, and promote sports/organizations/activities/etc., that you are enthusiastic about.
